Patient quote

I recently underwent surgery at the RVI following a diagnosis of breast cancer. It was with great apprehension that I arrived at Ward 45 on the day of my surgery. However, the care and understanding of everyone I met that day from the staff on Ward 45, then on to theatre, recovery and then to the overnight care on Ward 44, made what was bound to be a frightening and unpleasant experience as painless and comfortable as possible. Mrs PV

Surgical Services

Newcastle Breast Centre

The Newcastle Breast Centre at the RVI, is the largest and only unit designated with 'Centre' status  in the North of England. Within the centre, we treat over 550 breast cancer patients a year using the latest surgical, radiological and oncological techniques.

Specialist care to meet all your needs

Patients referred to the Breast Centre by their GPs are seen in one of the four one-stop symptomatic breast clinics we run each week.

In these one-stop clinics, patients are seen by both the surgical doctors and breast radiologist, and the results of the radiological test will be available immediately. When biopsies are taken in clinic the results are available the following week.

Most of the cancer patients treated in the Breast Centre are referred by the national breast screening programme. We also accept patients from other hospitals from within and outside the region for a specialist opinion.

The Newcastle Breast Centre provides surgical services to the Family History and Genetics Team - based at the Centre for Life - for patients who have a high risk of developing breast cancer and want to explore options for reducing this risk.

Who you may meet

Surgical care is provided by a team of seven consultant breast, oncoplastic and plastic surgeons, along with surgeons training in the speciality of Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.

Working closely together we provide a wide range of breast conservation and breast reconstruction operations. Patients with complex issues are usually seen in combined clinics by both cancer surgeons and a plastic surgeon. This integrated approach is unique, and directly benefits our patients.

Supported by our team of Macmillan Breast Cancer nurses and specialist Breast Reconstruction nurses, we ensure that our patients can access all the treatment options and support they need.

New anaesthetic and surgical techniques, together with our specialist day surgery unit, is allowing us to increase the range of procedures we offer as day-case treatment.

Breast Screening Unit

The regional Breast Screening and Assessment Service is also based at the RVI.

The service provides breast screening for the people of Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and North Durham, and oversees the breast screening programme in Cumbria.

Being part of the same unit gives us direct access to the specialist breast radiological services required to meet the needs of our breast cancer patients.

The Newcastle Breast Centre works very closely with the oncology services provided by the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) at the Freeman Hospital. The NCCC provides radiotherapy services for the North East.

At the forefront of treatment

The Newcastle Breast Centre is at the forefront of treating breast cancer.

Over the last four years we have adopted a 'universal oncoplastic approach' to breast cancer surgery to ensure that we help patients achieve the best combined cure rates, and cosmetic results.

We are the first unit in the UK to offer 'iodine seed localisation' in breast conservation surgery. Many of our patients are also given the chance to take part in national and international breast cancer treatment trials, as well as reconstruction studies.
