There are three endocrine surgeons in the unit who work closely with each other, committed to ensuring a very high standard of care. The three surgeons are Mr Richard D Bliss, Mr Nigel A G Jones and Professor Tom W J Lennard.
Richard Bliss has been working as an endocrine and breast surgeon in the RVI for 7 years after training in the North East and Australia. He was awarded the T S Reeve International Fellowship in Endocrine Surgery by the University of Sydney, Australia. He has been the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons since 2002. He is lead thyroid surgeon and vice-chair of the thyroid group for the North of England Cancer Network. He performs over 100 thyroidectomies each year as well as neck dissections for thyroid cancer, minimally invasive and open parathyroid surgery, laparoscopic and open adrenalectomy. Clinics are held every Thursday afternoon.
Nigel Jones is based at the Freeman Hospital and performs thyroid, parathyroid and vascular operations. He was appointed a consultant in 1987 after completing his training in Leeds. He works in a parallel clinic to the Freeman medical endocrinologists on Tuesday afternoons. He is a member of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons.
Tom Lennard works at the RVI and is Professor of Breast and Endocrine Surgery at the University of Newcastle. He is President of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons from 2007-9 and has been a member of the executive committee of the BAETS for 10 years. He has published widely on endocrine surgery, particularly the genetics of adrenal disease and is the editor of the standard textbook on endocrine surgery for higher surgical trainees in the UK. He offers thyroid, parathyroid, laparoscopic and open adrenal surgery and pancreatic surgery for endocrine disorders. His clinics are held on Tuesday mornings.
