There are four consultant Upper Gastro Intestinal Surgeons at Newcastle, Professor S Michael Griffin, Mr Nick Hayes, Mr Daya Karat and Mr Kamil Wynne.
Professor S Michael Griffin is Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 1989 after completing his training in the North of England and latterly in Hong Kong. He founded the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit and continues to lead its clinical and research service. He is involved with many national associations related to oesophago-gastric practice and recently held Presidency of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. His CV includes over 250 peer-reviewed scientific articles and he is on the National Steering Committee for two major oesophago-gastric cancer trials.
Mr Nick Hayes is an Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon who trained in the North-East of England and in Hong Kong and was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 1997. He is Management Lead for the Unit and is responsible for audit and administration within the team. He is a member of a number of national institutions and is currently Treasurer of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
Mr Daya Karat is a Consultant Upper GI Surgeon who trained also in the North-East and in Edinburgh. He has been a consultant at the Royal Victoria Infirmary since 2000. He is a member of several national surgical institutions and spearheads the minimally invasive surgical programme for the team and has been responsible for the mentoring of junior staff. He is responsible for running the oesophageal physiology service established nearly twenty years ago.
Mr Kamil Wynne trained in Leeds and worked as a Consultant Surgeon in South Shields General Hospital until five years ago when he became part of a hub and spoke arrangement with the Northern Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit. He has extensively trained in all aspects of upper GI surgery and together with Mr Karat heads up our minimally invasive surgical programme. He has just agreed to move to full-time practice within the unit.
