This is the Day Surgical Unit at the General Hospital. Here we care for adults who are undergoing surgical procedures as a day case.
Patients will have been invited for a pre-admission visit before your day surgery takes place
We can treat up to eleven patients every day. We work from Monday to Friday, starting at 7.30 am until 6.00 pm
We are a day case unit so there are no set visiting times. Patients may be accompanied by one or two of their relatives. We have no facilities for children.

Ward 19 is on the first floor at the Newcastle General Hospital. To find us:
- Come through the main entrance and take the lift or stairs up to the first floor.
- Follow the sign for Ward 19.
Staff you are likely to meet
The day case unit is run by nurses and support staff. You will also meet the doctor relevant to your specialty such as general surgery, orthopaedics. You will also meet the anaesthetist before your operation or procedure. Please ask any questions you mat have.
Things you need to know
- Parking Facilities are available with pay and display but prior arrangements can be made for collecting patients post operatively to minimise cost
