I completed my specialist training in urology in the NE having grown up in Newcastle. Before embarking on a career as a consultant I worked in Vellore, India to gain experience in reconstructive surgery and especially management of complex urethral strictures.
I then spent a fellowship year working in Sydney, Australia which was equally a wonderful experience.
My main field of work is to advise and treat people suffering from problems affecting the function of their lower urinary tract, which includes bladder, prostate, urethral and penile problems.
The work involves assessment and investigation in the clinic and the use of various treatments including surgical correction.
Appointed as a Consultant in 1998, currently clinical lead in Urology. I have led the department in developing and delivering complex minimally invasive urological surgery. I am involved in training in minimally invasive surgery within UK and Europe.
Research interest includes renal cancer, renal transplantation and minimally invasive surgery
I qualified from Leeds University in 1988. After completing basic surgical training in Leeds I spent two years performing scientific research into Prostate Cancer at Newcastle University.
I then completed higher surgical training in urology in the Northern Deanery before my appointment as Consultant Urological Surgeon in 2004. I have a particular interest in Bladder, prostate and renal cancer, as well as providing general urology care to patients in Newcastle and North Tyneside.
I am Chairman of the Uro-Oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT). The MDT offers a comprehensive range of treatments for all urological cancers.
In particular for localised prostate cancer, we offer laparoscopic and open radical prostatectomy, 3-D conformal external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy and active surveillance.
There are also a large number of clinical trials open for patient enrolment.
I have been a consultant urologist for 14 years. I work on the executive council of the Female and Reconstructive Urology subsection of BAUS, I am on the NCRI bladder cancer working group, and I have a major interest in training, sitting on the SAC for Urology. My clinical interests are in bladder cancer and bladder reconstruction, following cystectomy, and in surgery for incontinence, both in women and in men following prostate cancer surgery. As well as providing clinical sessions at the Freeman Hospital, I also work at Hexham General Hospital. I also have a very active research portfolio, in bladder cancer, voiding dysfunction in men, and incontinence in women
