The Prostate Screening Clinic is a special clinic for patients who have seen their GP with urinary related symptoms and may be showing signs of prostate cancer.
This is a “fast track” clinic which means that you will be seen as quickly as possible, within 14 days of your GP’s referral. The clinic is held every Tuesday in the Urology Clinic.
The Urology Clinic is based at Freeman Hospital.
When you arrive in the Urology Clinic, you be seen by one of our specialist nurses experienced in problems associated with the prostate, called a Urology Specialist Practitioner. The Specialist Practitioner will discuss your symptoms and explain what to expect during your time in the clinic.
You will firstly have a simple blood test called a PSA test. PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a substance made by the prostate gland. Small amounts of the PSA pass into the blood stream where its level can be measured. You may also have a rectal (back passage) examination to assess if the prostate feels abnormal.
If you have a raised PSA results you may also be required to have biopsies of prostate tissue taken. This is done with help of a special x-ray called a Trans-rectal Ultrasound (TRUS).
You will be given an appointment for one of our Prostate Review Clinics, which take place every Thursday in the Main Out-Patient Department at Freeman Hospital. Our consultants and Urology Specialist Practitioners will discuss the results of your tests with you, including whether any further tests or investigations are needed, so that you can make an informed choice on what to do next.
Our consultant urologists who specialise in treatment for prostate cancer are Mr P Powell and Mr E Paez.
