We use the latest telescopic and laser equipment to treat many urological conditions and are continually developing new techniques, which allow minimal damage to healthy tissue, ie. minimally invasive procedures.
Laparoscopic (also known as keyhole) surgery is minimally invasive and involves tiny incisions rather than larger cuts in traditional, open surgery, and the use of narrow instruments to carry out the treatment required. This approach allows for patients having a shorter hospital stay, rarely need for blood transfusions and quick recovery, and there are fewer complications.
We are leaders in the UK for the number and complexity of laparoscopic urological procedures undertaken having carried out over 1000 procedures to date. Our results have been audited and published in peer review journals.
Laparoscopic surgery is a highly specialist technique requiring expertise and special skills. We have a major laparoscopic urological surgery program for patients with kidney and prostate problems led by Mr N Soomro, who is one of only a few experienced urologists able to carry out these types of procedures in the UK. We now have six urologists in our department able to carry out operations using this technique.
We are committed to further developing the use of laparoscopy in order to improve the quality of care we can provide for our patients and currently offer laparoscopic surgery for:
