Patient quote

"I came to the Freeman Hospital because I could find no hospital in Scotland that uses leading edge laser technology for prostatectomy.  The fact that the Freeman Hospital is one of the very few in the UK to have this equipment is testament to the forward looking strategy of your organisation."  Mr JMcL

Laser (Greenlight © Laser) Prostatectomy

Contact: (0191) 213 7661 - Mrs Pam Yanez, Directorate Manager

The Freeman Hospital is currently the only provider of Greenlight © Laser treatment in the North of England, as well as being the closest centre for Scotland.

The Greenlight © Laser, or PVP (Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate), is an advanced, technological alternative to conventional prostate surgery or TURP (Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate) for men with lower urinary tract symptoms requiring surgery. Because it is a minimally invasive procedure using a laser, rather than surgery, the advantages of Greenlight © Laser treatment include:

  • lower risk of loss of erectile function
  • a shorter hospital stay, (usually an inpatient stay of less than 24 hours)
  • less bleeding & lower risk of requirement for blood transfusion
  • less requirement for a urethral catheter

More information about what you can expect when you have Greenlight © Laser treatment is available under "Your Treatment Pathway" or at the equipment manufacturer’s website at Laserscope.

If you would like to discuss this service in more detail, a referral can be made by your GP or by the urology department at your local hospital.
