  • Biography

I am a Consultant Hepatologist at the Freeman Hospital and also a member of the Institute of Cellular Medicine, Newcastle University where my research focuses on understanding how our genes influence severity of liver disease and identifying new treatments.

I was born in Durham and grew up in the North East of England.  I trained in medicine at University College London where I was awarded First Prize in Medicine in the final MB BS examination (The Philip Seth Belasco & Douglas Cree Prize, 1997).  My postgraduate specialist clinical training in Hepatology, Gastroenterology & General Medicine was undertaken at hospitals in North-West London including the Liver & Anti-Viral Unit, St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare), London.

My clinical expertise includes the management of patients with a range of acute and chronic liver conditions including:

    -  Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) & Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)

    -  Viral Hepatitis (hepatitis B & hepatitis C)

    -  Alcoholic Liver Disease

    -  Cirrhosis and its complications

    -  Liver Transplantation

I have a particular sub-specialist interest in the treatment of liver disease related to diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, ‘fatty liver’) and, together with Professor Chris Day and Dr Stuart McPherson, run the regional fatty liver service.

My personal interests and hobbies are in sailing and the theatre.
