  • Biography

    Dr Cosgrove graduated from Newcastle University in 1988 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1996.  A full-time Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Freeman Hospital since 2001, Dr Cosgrove is jointly responsible for the management of one of the 4th busiest UK intensive care units. Its clinical outcomes measured by a national intensive care database (ICNARC) are some of the best in the UK.

    Within the Trust and Northern Region he is a member of working parties ensuring direct patient involvement in advanced care planning (including DNACPR decisions.)  He also works with colleagues in the Trust to update the Law Society on the the medical perspective of withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatments.

    At national level Dr Cosgrove has assisted in the redevelopment of the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) Course on behalf of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and am an Examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists. His regional role in DNACPR decisions is also replicated in an advisory capacity to a Department of Health Working Party.

    Dr Cosgrove also has voluntary roles in Events Medicine for Durham County Cricket Club and advising the England and Wales Cricket Board on major incident planning for international cricket matches.
