  • Biography

I am one of the few clinicians in the UK with dual accreditation in palliative medicine and clinical oncology.
I graduated from medical school in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK in 1985.  I initially gained experience in respiratory medicine and HIV medicine in Newcastle, Manchester and London, then formally trained in Palliative Medicine – attaining entry to the specialist register for Palliative Medicine in 1995.
I then trained in Clinical Oncology, becoming a consultant Clinical Oncologist in 2000.  Prior to taking up the post as a consultant Clinical Oncologist I spent time as a Clinical Fellow at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto – within their Palliative Radiation Oncology Programme.
My main aim as an oncologist remains that of striving to optimise not only the duration but also the quality of life for patients, hence my role as UK Chief Investigator for the QUARTZ trial.
I have a keen interest in training and am the Royal College of Radiologist (RCR) Regional Specialty Advisor for the Northern Deanery and sit on the RCR Specialty Training Board.
