  • Biography

I qualified from Newcastle Medical school in 1982 and trained in general medicine and oncology before moving into palliative medicine in 1986.
I contributed to research into nausea and vomiting causes and treatments and have written articles and book chapters about this.
I was consultant at Marie Curie Hospice 1995-2003 before taking the palliative care lead post at Newcastle Hospitals.
I trained as a Cognitive Therapist in 1992 and began the UK’s first dedicated palliative care CBT clinic. This remains a great interest and I see patients with a wide variety of problems in my CBT clinic.
I have developed CBT skills training for cancer and palliative care staff as a means of improving patient care and taught this nationally, researching outcomes for staff and for patients.
