  • Biography

After qualifying in Wales in 2003, I trained in the South West (Somerset, Devon and Cornwall) and developed an interest in Early Inflammatory Arthritis, Transitional Care and Medical Education.

I qualified as a consultant in 2011 and started work at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases. In 2012 I took a sabbatical from work to complete a 2,600 mile solo circumnavigation of the UK in a kayak to raise money for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). After starting work in the North East I have become involved in the Early Inflammatory Arthritis Clinic and Transitional Care and was appointed as Associate Clinical Sub Dean at Newcastle University up until 2017.

Through my work with Young Adult patients I have developed an interest in managing pregnancy in patients with rheumatic disease and run joint obstetric and pregnancy clinics with my colleagues, Dr Liz Kidd and Miss Marie Smith. I chair the British Society for Rheumatology Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Special Interest Group and am deputy chair of BANNAR (Barbara Ansell National Network for Adolescent Rheumatology). I am also a non-executive director of Arthur’s Place (www.arthursplace.co.uk) a charity that runs a magazine and social network site for Young Adults with inflammatory arthritis. In 2016 I was presented with the NRAS patient champion award.

My research interest included Young Adult care but also Rheumatoid Arthritis. I live with my wife, who developed Rheumatoid Arthritis in her 20’s, and my young family in Tynemouth. In my ‘spare’ time I try to keep active by running, playing football and kayaking.
