Qualifying in 1979 from Bristol University, I worked in the Bristol area before finishing my paediatric training in the North East, specialising in neonatal medicine and becoming Consultant in neonatal medicine in 1990.
I am also Honorary Clinical Reader in Neonatal and Paediatric medicine at Newcastle University, and Clinical Director of the northern Regional Maternity Survey Office.
I have been active in many areas of research in neonatal and paediatric medicine, including aspects of child protection. I have interests in developmental physiology, particularly in relation to breast feeding and blood glucose control; cot death and care of subsequent infants; perinatal epidemiology; and mother-infant interaction.
I am Senior Editor of Archives of Disease in Childhood.
