  • Biography

    Having trained in Aberdeen and worked initially Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital I moved to the North East to complete my higher specialist training in Paediatrics and Child Health, then specialising in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine. I completed a PhD in Biological Sciences investigating the epidemiology of pleural infection in children. I took up an academic clinical lecturer post before being appointed as a consultant at the Great North Children’s Hospital in 2015. I am involved in a number of clinical and epidemiological research studies and am currently an honorary clinical senior lecturer in the Institute of Cellular Medicine, Newcastle University (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/icm/people/profile/matthewthomas3.html).

    As well as general respiratory paediatric problems, I am a consultant in the NE paediatric CF service and provide outreach clinics for CF in Darlington, Carlisle and Workington. I am also a consultant in the paediatric lung transplantation programme and the long term ventilation service.
