  • Biography

I grew up in Glasgow before moving to Newcastle University to study medicine, graduating with Distinction in 2004. I undertook higher specialist training in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine in the North East.

I treat a broad range of gastroenterology conditions and have a specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). I undertake a weekly clinic and endoscopy list and look after patients on ward 48 at the RVI.

I am the lead author of the British Society of Gastroenterology national guidelines for the management of IBD. I have extensive clinical research experience and am an investigator for multiple national and international clinical trials.

I lead a research programme in the Institute of Cellular Medicine at Newcastle University. My laboratory research focuses on the intestinal immune system, how this maintains health or can drive inflammation, and how our immune system interacts with, and is shaped by intestinal microbes (bacteria, viruses and fungi). During my research training I was awarded funding from the Wellcome Trust to undertake a Masters Degree and PhD in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, and was subsequently awarded a 4 year National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Academic Clinical Lecturership that I completed in 2019.

I am a previous recipient of the award ‘Young Gastroenterologist of the Year: Emerging Leader’ from the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), and have previously been awarded the BSG President’s medal. I am a current committee member of the BSG IBD Section, have previously Chaired the Trainees Section Committee, and have been a member of the Training Committee, Education Committee and Council of the Society. I am a member of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Ethics Committee and the Faculty of Medical Sciences Research and Innovation Committee
