What we do

Our mission statement:

The North East Transport and Retrieval Service aims to provide the highest quality of paediatric care, for acute an non-acute patients and their families from the point of referral to the handover of care at the receiving unit.

  • We have a single regional focus for provision of paediatric critical care to patients presenting acutely.
  • We provide a 24 hour, 365 days, Consultant led telephone triaging service, advice and decision support service for all referrals
  • We are committed to improving and developing the provision of safe transport for all children within its scope of care.

NECTAR ensures that critically ill children (from birth to 18 years of age) are transported rapidly by an expert team to one of the Paediatric Critical Care Units we have here in the North East of England :

-  The Great North Children’s Hospital at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle
-  The Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle; and
-  The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough

Members of the NECTAR team have extensive experience and training in providing expert care for critically ill children.
