NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing the best possible care for our patients and the local community. As part of this commitment the Trust is actively involved in healthcare research. In recent years the Trust has been one of the highest recruiting NHS research sites in England.

The NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre: Newcastle is one of the UK's first clinical trials facilities in the NHS to specialise in late phase (phase 3 or 4) commercial trials. It is a standalone facility on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality in Newcastle, between Westgate Road and Studley Terrace, in Fenham. It is run by a dedicated team, led by Professor Yan Yiannakou, Clinical Director.

In the NHS, patients are generally recruited to trials though specialist clinics; but many patients with common chronic conditions are managed outside hospitals, either by their GP or through self-care. Efficient recruitment to trials of common chronic conditions (such as headaches, back pain, moderate asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, common skin conditions) can be challenging. The PRC: Newcastle is an NHS trials unit that specifically fills that niche; by developing a capability to recruit from our surrounding communities, as well as from within the trust.

Our most valued partnership is with our patients and our local community. We aim to provide an enhanced patient experience through excellent facilities and patient feedback. The Centre has access to all NHS support services and has easy parking and public transport connections.

The Centre will collaborate with experienced specialist consultants, acting as Principal Investigators on relevant studies, as well as the wider research community across the North East and Cumbria. In this way, we complement established Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials capabilities.

Additional clinical cover is provided through GCP trained GPs on a sessional basis, who also act as a direct link to local GP practices and GPNs (GP Networks). This will build upon the CRN (Clinical Research Network) and Trust commitment to developing research delivery staff.

The provision of Patient Identification Centre (PIC) sites is facilitated through partnerships with two local Primary Care Networks covering a population of 80,000 patients. We want to reach a diverse range of participants from across the region and welcome GP referrals as well as direct enquiries if a trial is relevant.

The Patient Recruitment Centre: Newcastle is a bespoke facility, comprising clinical areas, office space and integrated pharmacy. It is designed to deliver late phase trials efficiently, professionally and at scale. It will help the Trust and CRN NENC to contribute to the UK Life Sciences Industrial Strategy (LSIS).
