Patients rate Newcastle Hospitals amongst the best in country for their care

Patients have rated Newcastle Hospitals amongst the best performing trusts in the country for their inpatient care. 

The results of the Care Quality Commission’s annual survey of inpatients placed the organisation as performing ‘better than expected’ in a number of key areas. 

The survey asked patients for their views on all aspects of their care such as the hospital environment, communication with staff, their involvement in decisions and whether they felt they were treated with dignity and respect.

In total 658 people responded – a response rate of 53.5% compared to the national average of 45% - and patient feedback placed Newcastle Hospitals highly for:

  • Providing enough privacy when being examined or treated in A&E
  • Having confidence and trust in the clinical staff treating them
  • Staff working well together
  • Staff being available to talk about any worries and fears
  • After the operation or procedure, did a member of staff explain how the operation or procedure had gone in a way you could understand?
  • Support after leaving hospital to help patients’ recover and manage their condition
  • Being treated with respect and dignity

The Trust, whose main hospitals include the Freeman Hospital and the RVI, was also banded as being better than the expected score (average of Trusts) in: 

  • Accident and Emergency Department
  • Care and treatment
  • Operations and procedures
  • Leaving Hospital
  • Respect and dignity
