Food in hospital

Food can have a major impact on the health and recovery of patients when they come into hospital.

That's why we put a lot of effort into providing a good quality and range of food for patients and visitors to our hospitals.

We serve three meals a day for patients across Newcastle Hospitals, all of which meet minimum nutritional standards.

Food in hospital saladAt the Freeman Hospital, we have menus - including pictorial menus - available on all wards. Our range of menus cater for different religious and cultural beliefs, and for people who require specialised diets.

A high proportion of patient and restaurant meals are freshly prepared on the day by our team of chefs in the Catering Department. We use a range of ingredients from the local area, including:

  • Organic milk from Durham
  • Farm Assured meat
  • Free range eggs

  • Fish from sustainable stocks
  • Fairtrade tea and coffee from local supplier Ringtons.

Our ingredients are free from undesirable additives, we are Gluten Free Accredited and a range of Fairtrade and gluten-free snacks are available in the restaurant.
