Northern Genetics Service

100,000 Genomes Project

Welcome to the North East and North Cumbria NHS Genomic Medicine Centre (NENC NHS GMC).  We are based at the Institute of Genetic Medicine, International Centre for Life, Central Parkway, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3BZ.

100,000 Genomes Project

The 100,000 Genomes Project was a national programme of work undertaken by NHS England and Genomics England Limited; its goal was to sequence 100,000 human genomes, from people with certain rare diseases and from people with certain types of cancer.  It was carried out in 2 phases.  Phase 1 (sometimes referred to as the “Pilot Phase”) was carried out by Newcastle University during 2013 and 2014.  Phase 2 (sometimes referred to as the “Main Phase”) was carried out by the NHS and started in May 2016 and was completed in December 2018.

Delays in return of results

We are aware that some patients and participants enrolled into the 100,000 Genomes Project (both Pilot and Main phases) are still waiting for their results and that this is understandably causing frustration and disappointment. The NENC GMC are doing their best to ensure reports are issued to referring clinicians as quickly as possible.

The National Genomic Medicine Service

During 2020 a new national genomic medicine service will be launched across England. In the North East and North Cumbria region this will be managed by the Yorkshire and North East Genomic Laboratory Hub (YNE GLH).

When the genomic medicine service launches there will be a number of health conditions eligible for whole genome sequencing including:

  • Renal Cystic disease
  • Paediatric Neurology
  • Adult Neurology
  • Blood cancers (Haematological Malignancies)
  • Soft tissue cancers (Sarcoma)
  • Childhood cancers (Paediatric Oncology)
