Jargon buster


Safe use of controlled doses of radiation to treat disease, especially cancer.  Usually given by pointing an X-ray machine at the part of the body to be treated, but can also be given by drinking liquid, having an injection or having a radioactive implant put into your body (brachytherapy).

Here you will find some of the specialist services we provide at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. The Haematology and Oncology teams have recently joined forces to form one Directorate with different Departments as described below.


Radiotherapy uses carefully measured doses of radiation to treat cancers (and sometimes other disorders). 

Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre

As part of your care and treatment with us, we may have approached you about taking part in a clinical trial or research study. Here we will try and explain what this involves.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is aimed at reducing and relieving the symptoms of cancer and its treatment. 

Macmillian Cancer Information and Support Centre

The Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Centre was established in 2002 as part of a national programme to provide Cancer Information Centres throughout the UK.

Room for you

Our ‘Room for You’ Arts Service aims to bring benefits in health and wellbeing to our patients and their carers whilst receiving care and treatment here at NCCT.

Hairloss support services

Hairloss support services gives patients with hair loss as a result of their therapy the opportunity to look at the various designs of headwear available.

Complementary Therapy

Complementary therapies can be used to help patients deal with some of the treatments they have for cancer.

Prostate Brachytherapy

Prostate brachytherapy is a treatment option for early, localised prostate cancer, and an increasingly popular alternative to radical surgery and radiotherapy.

Chemotherapy services

Chemotherapy plays a significant role in treating patients with cancer. We provide chemotherapy services at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care and at some local health centres.
