Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Centre

Who we are

The Macmillan Cancer Support and Information Service at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a free, confidential service to anyone affected by cancer.  We can offer time to listen, time to talk and time to make sense of it all.

We aim to help with any aspect of your life including treatment, family and problems with work, money worries, including help with benefits or planning ahead.

Our service is open to people at any stage of their cancer journey including if you are worried about cancer, recently diagnosed, undergoing treatment or have completed treatment; we can support family, friends, relatives, carers and health professionals.

You don’t need to be referred or have an appointment to see us, just drop-in to ask a question, browse our information or speak to our friendly team.

We can offer you a wide range of information and support

What we can do

  • Give you a space to talk in a quiet comfortable room
  • Help you look at any aspect of your life from money worries/ work issues to housing problems
  • Give you up to date, accurate information about cancer
  • Provide accessible information in other languages, braille, large print and on CD
  • Help you find local support groups or services such as bereavement counselling and complimentary therapies
  • Give advice on headwear and access to wig fitting service

Could you support people affected by cancer?

Why do you need me?

The Macmillan Cancer Support and Information centre offers free, high quality, confidential information and support to everyone. People receiving a cancer diagnosis will usually have lots of questions.  The aim of our staff and volunteers is to meet their individual information and support needs to the highest standard.

Where: Based at Northern Cancer Care Centre (NCCC), Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Service, Freeman Hospital and occasionally at other locations across Newcastle upon Tyne.

Times:  3 to 6 hours per week, flexible to fit in with your existing commitments

The volunteer role

The volunteer role would involve working with the Information and Support Centre Manager, other staff and volunteers within Northern Cancer Care Centre to deliver high quality information and support service.

Main duties

  • Meeting and greeting visitors, providing a warm welcome to the Macmillan service
  • Providing a friendly, listening ear to people and referring customers to other services when appropriate.  Referring complex cases to centre manager.
  • Explaining the resources and services available and directing people to local and national services that may be of help to them
  • Collecting and recording information on-line about people who use the service
  • Keeping the information displays stocked and up to date
  • Supporting outpatients and cancer wards by maintaining information stocks and being present to help raise awareness of the service
  • Follow policies around confidentiality, data security and protection of vulnerable groups

Useful skills, experience and competencies include:

  • Tact and sensitivity with an open, warm and friendly manner and good communication skills
  • Computer skills
  • Non-judgemental and ability to actively listen (training will be given)
  • Awareness of own limitations and boundaries
  • A willingness and commitment to the role and to undertake necessary training
  • Most important of all is the willingness to learn and the desire to support other

Other information

As you will have access to confidential information, you’ll be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement.   We have regular team meetings and ongoing training based on individual needs.
