Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Paediatric CCU/Ward 12 in the Great North Children's Hospital, Newcastle is the Children's Critical Care Unit. We are an 18 bedded modern critical care facility, caring for all critically-ill children from the North East and North Cumbria with vast number of conditions relating to:

  • respiratory & ENT
  • general surgery
  • neurology
  • neurosurgery
  • burns & plastic surgery                  
  • trauma         


  •  nephrology
  • endocrinology 
  • oncology
  • immunology & bone marrow transplant
  • ophthalmology
  • orthopaedics

We work closely with the Children's Heart Unit based at the Freeman Hospital.

The Great North Children's Hospital and Freeman Hospital host one of the largest and most comprehensive PCC services in the UK and serve the largest geographical area in England.

NECTAR – North East Children’s Transport And Retrieval is the region’s specialist Paediatric Intensive Care transport service. They ensure that critically ill children (from birth to 18 years of age) are transported by a highly-specialized medical and nursing team rapidly and safely from the district general hospitals to the Paediatric Critical care units...
