Musculoskeletal Services

Children's Orthopaedics

Our Paediatric Orthopaedic Service is led by experienced paediatric orthopaedic surgeons and is based in the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle.

Our specialist staff deal with disorders and injuries to muscles, tendons, joints, bones and nerves in children and young people.

We aim to provide our patients with the best possible orthopaedic care. The unit, which has specially trained clinical staff and a dedicated paediatric intensive care unit, is one of very few in the UK which meets new government regulations on orthopaedic services for children.

Our expertise and quality of service can be demonstrated by the increasing number of patients who are referred to us from other hospitals in the region.

Specialist care for our younger patients

Our specialists provide expert advice and guidance on managing chronic conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and congenital (from birth) dislocation of the hip. We also work with children who have complex fractures and bone-joint infections.

We work in partnership with the Northern Genetic Service at Newcastle's Centre for Life, pooling our expertise to deliver clinics for inherited conditions such as skeletal dysplasia. We also work closely with our bone and soft tissue tumour specialists to ensure that our younger cancer patients benefit from the latest all-round paediatric care.
