Adult juvenile idiopathic arthritis and transitional care

We have a dedicated team to care for children and young people with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and other rheumatic diseases.

This specialist paediatric rheumatology team is multidisciplinary – this means it is made up of medical and care professionals who have a range of backgrounds and skills. The team is based at the Great North Children's Hospital.

Childhood to adult care

In Newcastle, the Great North Children's Hospital is situated next to the RVI in the city centre.

We have introduced a ‘transitional care service’ where young people are seen jointly by the paediatric and adult teams. Their care will be transferred to a rheumatologist who deals with adult patients, and they will also be supported by other healthcare professionals.

When patients with JIA are transferred to the adult rheumatology service, they are seen by a dedicated adult rheumatologist - Dr Martin Lee – who has a special interest in JIA. This service is based at the Musculoskeletal Unit at the Freeman Hospital.
