Refractory inflammatory disease

The refractory inflammatory disease clinic provides patients from across the region and the country with treatment for a variety of conditions.

Conditions we treat

Some of the conditions we treat include:

  • refractory inflammatory arthritis
  • vasculitis
  • familial fever syndromes
  • diagnostic conundrums.

Most patients are referred to us by consultants or doctors from our own or other hospitals.

Investigations and management plan

When they first come to us, patients will receive a thorough assessment from Professor John Isaacs, which will include appropriate investigations.

Once investigations have been completed, and usually following conversations with the clinician who referred the patient to us, we develop a management plan. Sometimes this will lead to patients being involved in research studies - this will be discussed between the patient and their doctors.

Once a management plan is in place, patients will be followed-up as appropriate, generally in partnership with the referring team.

Teaching clinic

The refractory inflammatory disease clinic is a teaching clinic, so at times patients will be assessed by doctors and rheumatologists in training.
