Specialised genetic services have developed in the United Kingdom as regional centres of expertise, and in the Northern Region these services are co-ordinated through the Northern Genetics Service which is part of the Institute of Genetic Medicine.

Our service is provided at both the International Centre for Life in Newcastle and the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Comprehensive and fully integrated specialist facilities

The main purpose of the Northern Genetics Service is to provide comprehensive and fully integrated clinical and laboratory services to the highest of standards that can help reduce the incidence of illnesses associated with genetic disease.

To achieve this, there is close interaction between the various sections of the service with other regional centres around the country, and also good communication between genetic services and other relevant clinical specialties.  We have a number of Nurse Specialists and Counsellors to help patients understand their condition and make key decisions about their treatment.

Committed to providing a first class service

The Northern Genetics Service is committed to working to national guidelines in order to provide first class services for all patients.

In addition to the custom built clinical and laboratories at the International Centre for Life and the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, the Northern Genetics Service also provides outpatient services to local hospitals to avoid patients having to travel long distances to be seen.
