Enrolling onto the PR programme

Your consultant or health care professional will discuss your suitability for the programme and can refer directly into the service.

If you are suitable you will be placed onto the waiting list. Currently the waiting list is 4 months long.

When you get to the top of the list you will be invited to attend an assessment appointment at a site of your choice.

The assessment appointment usually lasts 45 minutes.

This is a one to one appointment and an opportunity for the PR team to get to know you. It also allows you to ask any questions you may have about the programme.

During the appointment you will be asked to do a walk test. This is to assess your baseline level of exercise tolerance. We ask you to wear flat shoes for this. Please also bring your inhalers if you have them to your appointment together with a list of your current medications.

In the assessment we will discuss any goals you would like to work towards during the 8 weeks programme, which may include returning to a hobby you have stopped doing or doing an activity of daily living more easily.

Once you have had your assessment you will be enrolled onto a programme. You will be offered a choice of venue either at the Freeman Hospital or the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The course is run on a variety of days and times by qualified and experienced respiratory physiotherapists. After the assessment appointment you typically start on the programme within in 2 weeks.

Hospital transport is available to you if you meet the criteria.
