Children’s Speech and Language Therapy

This page gives you information about the Newcastle Hospitals Speech and Language Therapy Service for children.

The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service provides expert guidance and support for children with speech, language and other communication problems.

Our services

Speech therapy helps children to communicate to the best of their ability. Our service works to minimise negative impacts of communication problems on children's families, their education and social lives.

Speech Therapist with childrenThe Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service supports children up to the age of 18 who live or go to school in Newcastle. We also treat children from outside the city if they have more serious problems, often linked with other medical needs. We help children with a range of problems including:

  • understanding or using spoken language
  • using speech sounds
  • chewing and swallowing
  • speaking fluently (stammering)
  • using appropriate communication skills
  • voice disorders.

We provide advanced, child-centred, integrated support. We will assess your child's needs and work closely with you, your child and other healthcare specialists and education staff to develop an individual care plan which links into your child's everyday activities. This enables children to continue their normal lives as much as possible.

For advice on how to support a child's early speech and language skills please watch this video and contact Speech and Language Therapy on 0191 282 3085 if you have any concerns regarding your child's communication skills

Our specialist team

Our team includes highly-trained speech and language therapists and dedicated support staff. The team works with education professionals and healthcare staff to ensure that children receive the best possible treatment, tailored to their individual needs.

Care near you

We aim to make treatment as accessible as possible. We see children in their own home, school or nursery, as well as at the RVI and in specialist clinics across Newcastle.

We have an ‘open referral system’. This means that anyone, including parents, can refer your child to be seen by one of our expert team. If your child is referred by someone else, you will always be asked to give your consent.
